Fine Arts Festivals

The Medina County Schools’ Educational Service Center sponsors five annual Fine Arts Festivals. They are as follows:

1. Solo and Ensemble Festival – January 25, 2014, Buckeye High School

This festival provides students with an opportunity to showcase their musical talents. It also serves as a preparation for the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District VI adjudicated events at the high school and junior high/middle school levels. OMEA-qualified adjudicators give performance ratings and verbal comments to students participating in the event. Students from Medina County public and nonpublic school districts, as well as homeschooled students, are eligible to participate in the event.

2. All-Star” Bands Festival – 2014 Date and Location TBA

Students are selected based upon their musical ability, interest, potential for growth, and the instrumentation of the ensembles. The 2013 Junior High/Middle School and High School “All-Star” Bands performed in concert at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18, at Brunswick High School. Ms. Kathleen McGrady (band director at Springfield Local Schools) was the guest conductor for the JH/MS Band. Mr. Frank Cosenza (retired band director, West Geauga Local Schools) served as guest conductor of the High School “All-Star” Band.

3. Visual Arts Festival—High School Senior Show – March 2014

The format is similar to a graduating art major in college who is required to hold a senior show. Additionally, the Medina County Art League presented five scholarship awards (totaling $2,800) to the winners of its “High School Seniors Scholarships Programs” on Monday, May 20, 2013. This show is held in partnership with Medina Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital; Medina Community Medical Condo Association; and the Medina County Art League.

4. Fair Honors Ensembles – Week of Medina County Fair

Students are selected for membership in these ensembles by their school music director on the basis of their playing and singing ability. Rehearsals for the Medina County Fair Honors Bands and Choirs are held daily for two weeks preceding the Medina County Fair. A 92-member county honors band and a 193-member honors choir participated in August 2013.

5. Medina Hospital Student Artwork Display – September 2013-August 2014

An outgrowth of the spring Visual Art Festival is a year-long rotating student artwork display in the South Medical Office Building, Medina. The rotation schedule is September-November; November-January; January-March; April-May; and June-August. This public exhibit of student artwork is the result of a partnership between Medina Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital; Simmons Brothers Construction; Medina County Schools’ ESC; and Medina County visual arts teachers.
