Training is required for all substitute teachers.  The type of training is dependent on a candidate's background. Below is an outline of the different training offered by the ESC to substitute teachers.

 Substitute Teacher Orientation

Every prospective NCSSA candidate must attend a Substitute Teacher Orientation prior to employment with the NCSSA. The length of the orientation varies depending upon class attendance size. There is a one-hour presentation followed by an individual check-out process with our staff.

After you have reviewed the schedule listed to the right, you must click on the date of choice to register. If you have any questions, please call our office at 330.723.6393 x 127.

Substitute Teacher Training

Substitute teachers with no background in education, who have not student taught, or those who have been out of a classroom for more than five (5) years, are required to complete a substitute training course. We offer two options. The first is an online course called Sub Skills sponsored by STEDI (licensed by Utah State University).  The second option is the in-person Safe and Engaged Class for those who prefer in-person learning. The curriculum taught in the in-person course is the same material utilized in the online course.

Option 1 - Sub Skills Online Course
The online platform allows the substitute teacher to complete the course at his/her own pace. Substitutes must complete an assessment at the end and are required to send it to our office as proof of completion. Participants in the online class will have year-long access to the online training course and material that can be used in the classroom. Please use the ESC of Medina County as your school district when registering for the Sub Skills Course. The cost for the online course is $39.99 paid directly to STEDI.

Option 2 - Safe and Engaged Class (in-person)
An intensive one-day, Sub Skills Class for those who prefer in-person learning. The class runs from 9:00-3:30. The curriculum for the in-person class is based on the online Sub Skills program sponsored by STEDI. The in-person class allows the substitute teacher to interact with other class participants throughout the day. Upon completion, they receive take-away material that can be used in the classroom. The cost is $50.00. The in-person class will be offered on the dates listed below.  Click on the current class date to begin the registration process. Registration for future classes will open after the current class has ended. The registration deadline is 10 days prior to the class and must be paid in full.
