Substitute Teaching Process
Medina County

The Educational Service Center of Medina County maintains a list of substitute teachers for Black River Local, Buckeye Local, Cloverleaf Local, Highland Local, Medina City, and Medina County Career Center School Districts.

Information regarding substitute teaching in the Brunswick City School District can be found under Substitute Teaching Process NCSSA at the bottom of this page.

The Wadsworth City Schools will be contracting with a different provider for substitute services for the 2018-19 school year.  If you would like to substitute teach in the Wadsworth, please contact them directly.

There are four steps that must be taken to become a substitute teacher in Medina County.

Step #1 - Complete AppliTrack Application and complete ALL the forms listed to the right.

Step #2 - Please call our office 330-723-6393, Ext. 127 or 140, to schedule an appointment to bring all of the downloaded, printed, and fully completed forms to the right, along with the following:

  • A Valid Ohio Teaching or Substitute License - If you have a valid Ohio Teaching or Substitute License, we must have a copy in our office.  If you do not have a teaching license and need to apply for a substitute license you must apply online through the Ohio Department of Education. You can apply for your license before making your appointment to bring in your paperwork.

** Please note: If you are applying for a NEW license our office must have a copy of your official transcript that shows you have earned either your Bachelor's or Master's degree BEFORE we can approve your licensure online through the Ohio Department of Education.**

  • A Criminal Record Check - If you have completed a BCI and FBI check within the past 1 year, we will accept copies. If you have not been fingerprinted within the past 1 year, ESCMC offers fingerprinting by appointment only using the Web Check electronic fingerprinting system for the BCI and FBI checks.  There is a $30 fee for the BCI and $30 fee for the FBI fingerprinting.  We accept cash, check, credit card (Visa, Master Card, Discover), and money order.

Step #3Training Using Public School Works-Effective 2011 - All substitute teachers are required to complete Public School Works training. Our office will register you during your appointment using your email address.

**Once you have completed the required trainings, please email or mail your certificate of completion. You will not be placed on our sub list until our office receives this documentation. ALL TRAINING MODULES must be completed BEFORE you will be placed on the sub list.**

Step #4 - Once you have completed Steps 1 - 3,  you will be placed on our substitute list.  Please keep in mind we do a list each Friday.

Step #5 - Your employment will now be board approved. Our board meets on the 4th Monday of each month.  At this board meeting, you will also be approved for Black River Local Schools if you have indicated an interest in substituting there.  You will then be emailed information regarding Aesop login for Black River.

Aside from our board meeting, each individual school district has their own board meeting, at which substitute teachers are approved for employment.  These schools include Buckeye Local, Cloverleaf Local, Highland Local, Medina City, and the Medina County Career Center.  You will then receive another packet of information from each of these districts in which you signed up to work.

Substitute Teaching Process
NCSSA

The Educational Service Center of Medina County processes substitutes for employment in both Medina County schools and in the schools affiliated with the North Coast Shared Service Alliance (NCSSA) in Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit Counties.
Visit the NCSSA website at www.northcoastssa.org to learn more about the consortium.  Although some of the pre-employment documents can be used to process your employment with both ESCMC and NCSSA, there is some additional paperwork that that needs to be completed for each individual organization.

The first step in the NCSSA hiring process is to complete an online AppliTrack application.  Once you have completed the AppliTrack application, you will be contacted by a member of the NCSSA team.
