The Medina County Schools’ Educational Service Center (ESC) Governing Board and the Highland Local School District were honored to present Christopher Ilg the 2014 Homer B. Smith Teacher of Excellence Award at the regular board meeting on May 19, 2014 in the Highland High School Media Center.

The Medina County Schools’ ESC Governing Board annually recognizes one teacher from the three local school districts to be honored with this award.  With great pleasure, Mr. Homer B. Smith bestowed the prestigious award to Mr. Ilg.  Along with the plaque, Mr. William Koran presented a commemorative mug and a $1,500 gift certificate that entitles him to attend any national conference of his choice within his field of expertise.

Mr. Ilg is the Choir and Music Theory teacher at Highland High School. He has taught at Highland for the past 23 years. Nominated by Mrs. Carrie Knapp, Highland High School Assistant Principal, because of his devotion and commitment to his students and the community, she stated that Mr. Ilg “continuously works at his craft to increase the quality of learning for the students at Highland High School.”  Furthermore, Mr. Ilg has written and received a grant to improve individual assessment opportunities for his students.  In addition to teaching, he is actively involved with community members and attends various meetings. He resides in Medina with his wife, Kate, and their three children.
