Medina County “Robofest 2012”
Local Qualifying Competition
On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the “Robofest 2012” Local Qualifying Competition, sponsored by the Medina County Schools’ ESC, was held at the Medina County University Center. Robofest is a competition of autonomous robots that encourages students to have fun while learning principles of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Students in Grades 4-8 competed in one of three categories: Exhibition, RoboFashion/Dance, or Robots to the Rescue.
- Students competing in Exhibition built and programmed their robots in any fashion they wanted as long as the program used science or math in its presentation.
- Teams that competed in RoboFashion and Dance choreographed multiple robots as well as their own dance moves to music.
- Robots to the Rescue set up the premise that there was an earthquake, and in order to save “people” from the top of the buildings, “rocks” had to be removed. Teams programmed their robots to use light, touch, and sound sensors to accomplish these tasks.
Teams advancing to the Regional Robofest Competition will submit a video of their presentation for judging. World Championships will be held at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan on May 19.
