On Thursday, May 13, 2010, four school districts, Brunswick City, Highland Local, Medina City, and Wadsworth City participated in Model UN which was sponsored by the Medina County Schools’ ESC and held at the Medina County University Center.
Opening ceremonies were followed by the Pease Essay Contest Winner, Emily Nosek of Highland Middle School, who wrote an article a poem called Be the One Voice. Upon completion of Emily reading her essay, the General Assembly debated 3 resolutions.
Resolution one stated Greece (Claggett Middle School) requested help from the UN to deal with drug abuse and trafficking into Greece. Although there were many in favor the general assembly voted against the resolution.
Resolution two stated Morocco (A.I.Root) requested help in the fight against Violence against women. Again although there were many affirmations the resolution was not passed.
Resolution three stated Somalia (Highland Middle School) requested aid from the UN for the deforestation leading to violence and desertification in Somalia.
After the General Assembly was adjourned the students broke up into several Council Sessions dealing with other issues in various countries. The students were careful not to let their own opinions interfere with the way the countries viewed the issues and voted accordingly.
